As we stand on the precipice of the new year, we face a choice: will we choose to heed the call for the adventure ahead?
Adventures aren’t reserved only for the world’s outliers – they call to every one of us. Some of us will choose fake versions – elevating trips, cars, and other stand-ins to the adventure role. Others will muffle the need for adventure with alcohol, drugs, food, sports, entertainment, social media or other addictions in an attempt to ignore the calling. Still others will jump at the first option presented, missing out on the critical reflection allowing the true calling to be heard. 2025 is our opportunity to pause, listen, and step into the uncertainty (but high aim!) of what awaits.
The call to adventure is at the core of every great story – including ours. Joseph Campbell identified this calling as Step 1 of his intriguing Hero’s Journey model that comprises every great myth and cinematic masterpiece. Step ONE! Until we are willing to pause, reflect and listen closely, the call goes unanswered – and for most, this is exactly the outcome. But we have a choice. Rather than settling for the noise of the new year and the regret of rushed resolutions, what if this year we began with a listening ear, tuning into the call for adventure that has always been there, whispering our name in that still small voice?
